I have decided to dip my Fussy Eater toes into new waters and see where it takes me. The waters I refer to belong to Substack and after seeing some great writers and commentators on here, joining them was a no brainer. So once a week I will be posting my thoughts and views on food and drink.
So, those of you who don’t know me, will be wondering who is Ronan Leonard and why is he using the moniker The Fussy Eater? Well I am a man who wears a couple of hats and those hats involve two monikers, The Tec Dr and The Fussy Eater.
The Tec Dr
Back in 2014 I started writing and blogging as the Tec Dr about tech. Tech was something I have loved for years, and they do say write about what you love. By the end of 2014 I had been published in The Journal, joined the NUJ and joined the excellent team in Irish Tech News. By 2016 I didn’t like the hard slog of transcribing interviews, which lead to the Irish Tech News podcast been born. At the end of February 2024, Irish Tech News hit an important milestone with our podcast, we published our 1500th podcast. An interview I had done with Keiron Holyome from BlackBerry.
The Fussy Eater
Besides tech, one of my other great loves is food. In fact a good friend of mine once asked me if I was During 2019 an old college friend and I decided to meet up once a week and have lunch in different restaurants. We were having fun doing this and writing about our culinary travels was the last thing on my mind. During a Christmas party in 2019 organised by a PR company who I dealt with for Irish Tech News, I had a conversation that partly changed my life. Chatting with one of the PR executives, I mentioned my weekly lunchtime meetings with my old college friend, and she suggested that I should write a blog detailing the weekly culinary journey that we are undertaking. When I mentioned that I was a fussy eater, she said that’s what will make my blog unique.
A week later the Fussy Eater blog was born, and my reviews would take you on a journey of Dublin restaurants as seen through the eyes of a fussy eater. Around ten days later my first restaurant review was published, but soon things suddenly changed. Within two months Covid hit and Ireland was in lockdown, so I could no longer continue writing my restaurant reviews. Restaurants, suddenly pivoted and became takeaways, and I pivoted too, reviewing some of these restaurants that pivoted. When things finally got to back normal, I was back reviewing restaurants in person. I even managed to do some reviews in London, including my first Michelin Starred restaurant.
My restaurant reviews have slowed down recently but they will be back up later this week. You will also see me post my thoughts on food, drink and the foodie scene once a week on here, Substack. In the meantime, if you like what you read, please subscribe to my Substack.
